Through some unprecedented volcanic upheaval, a portion of the ocean floor must have been thrown to the surface, exposing regions which for innumerable millions of years had lain hidden under unfathomable watery depths.

So great was the extent of the new land which had risen beneath me, that I could not detect the faintest noise of the surging ocean, strain my ears as I might.

Nor were there any sea-fowl to prey upon the dead things.

For several hours I sat thinking or brooding in the boat, which lay upon its side and afforded a slight shade as the sun moved across the heavens. As the day progressed, the ground lost some of its stickiness, and seemed likely to dry sufficiently for travelling purposes in a short time. That night I slept but little, and the next day I made for myself a pack containing food and water, preparatory to an overland journey in search of the vanished sea and possible rescue.''

last year i made my third visitation to the fabulous extravaganza that is all tomorrows parties. it was a lot of fun, as always. they held a mixtape swap thingy for people to discover/pass on new music and the like, so i racked my brain for way longer than i should of really racked it for to make up a really ace playlist and then hand-assembled a little slipcase for it to live in. artwork was a combination of old ideas and processes, cut-shapes on paint and photographs.

i am in a limbo period right now, and between odd jobs, driftwood ideas and the occasional ponder and despair, i'm finding comfort/taking solace in the things in art and design that i enjoy the most, or at least the items/material/physical beings that inspire me to no end and may or may not have some sort of bearing on my life.

i'm sure any who know will no doubt be aware of how much i rattle on about the importance of a meaningful record cover, so i'll start with some that have really meant something to me over the how-ever-many-years i've successfully dodged falling pianos and anvils.

here are four that have particularly inspired me the last however many years;

ISIS, oceanic, 2002 / artwork, design by aaron turner

simple. fitting. apt. i was in love with this record before i had even heard it, and i was still in love even after i realized that ISIS were not a band to ''get into'' very simply. i think that even though i didn't necessarily enjoy the music on the first couple of plays, the fact that the sound and atmosphere of this release was so dripping (literally) with nautical themes, and that the tone and recording of the album really put you into a place of crushing pressure, that a sleeve that only goes on to show the rippling of waves and a booklet composed mostly of photographs of the ocean speaks volumes.

there isn't much needs be said here - it's weird, just like what gabriel's pop-rock done strange is all about. i cannot even find much said about the artwork or sculpture on the internet, and thinking about it, i don't think i want to. mystery is wonder as ignorance is bliss.

at the drive-in, relationship of command, 2000 / artwork by damon locks

like the mythological sacking of the city of troy, in which the greek soldiers lay waste to the city by hiding away inside of the hollowed wooden horse, this album does exactly that. what we have here is something that is imitating a 'regular' disk and a 'normal' inside booklet, but the real content of this record is anything but. it sneaks into your bag at the record store and then steals its way inside of your record player and before you know it, everything is over. all the things you loved about music before are wiped clean; everything you thought you knew about music is eviscerated, blown to pieces by the sheer audacity and intense aural riptides that at the drive-in make with what may as well be alien artifacts at their disposal as opposed to the mundane guitar or microphone, the sound is just that special. basically, sticking a wooden horse on the front of this album is the simplest way of not showing their sound, and the wonder from the graphic construction of the chop-cut linocuts was enough for this record to find it's way to my collection all those many years ago. well, that and an absolutely ridiculous live show of hit single one armed scissor on later... with jools holland.

nine inch nails, the fragile, 1999 / design by david carson

this, like oceanic, is another sleeve that had me hooked from the design alone, although nine inch nail's output is far more easy going than that of ISIS', though not necessarily any more simple. in fact, calling it easy going is quite ignorant of me in it's own right. irregardless, this is a true visual depiction of how this record sounds. i have nothing more i can say to back that up. i honestly cannot think of how i could even begin to prove that, or recite why i think that this is the visual that matches the aural. you don't even care. i don't even care. just have a listen to this fabulous downer of an album and have a think on that one yourself. i'll be right, you'll see.

this isn't to say i am ''leaving'' blogspot, as i have lately seen a fair few folk, for i don't necessarily see the point in departing from one network to another so easily. i spent a lot of my time going through my blogs following list and i'd like to hope that one or two of them might chance across my own posting every now and again. still, it's a corner of the internet i hold down and i'm not going to drop it simply to bandwagon over to another. both will do fine.

spazzy irish instru-mentalists AND SO I WATCH YOU FROM AFAR recently asked facebook/the internets for people to come forward and design a 12'' cover for their newest single, search: party: animal, which you can listen to here. the competition also asked for a remix of their new song, but i'm not savvy enough for anything like that.

i fucking adore this band, they haven't released a single bad record yet and i have such high hopes for them in the next few years. hell, they're doing mint for themselves as it is, so it can only get better. the new song is from their forthcoming EP gangs and after that comes there second full length. exciting times! cannot wait to see them again at 2000 trees.

anyway, i produced three images that i thought were apt to their sound, though i only sent two of them off... i should of only sent one, actually, but i couldn't decide.

the feeling and method behind these images was captured best whilst trying to replicate the sounds i could hear in the song and their sound in general - very astute, sharp, cutting licks of guitar amongst a very chaotic, noisy but very well tuned and adjusted series of bounding rhythms. to me, i see lots of geometric shapes against a more colourfull almost 'jangley' cascading sound of things breaking - after all, they do say we they are the bull and we, the listeners, are the china shop. i wanted to capture that sonic wave of smash right down to a T, or at least my best attempt at it.

the shards are a throwback both to an old design of mine from foundation and their logo itself. i have wanted to get the cascading shards into a number of things for the last few years, albeit they have all been very personal, so i figured now would be a good time to bring them back. older incursions in sonic frequencies that cause shattering shards can be found here and here.

the images are made through a series of playful print exercises, paint, ink, cellulose thinner and pen, finished in photoshop for fine tuning and design needs.

the winners have still to be announced, and the deadline was close on two weeks now. the band say they are overwhelmed with responses and the decision is difficult to make, so even if i don't win, i'm excited to see and hear the final outcomes!

last week i went to berlin. here is some documents of said travel.

there is far, far too much to say about berlin, so there's a good selection of my week in photographs. a fantastic foray into a truly troubled city that, even from it's past it still has a grey, blok stillness to it's atmosphere evident from it's architecture, memorials and the very fact that a lot of the destruction from the battle that raged through it's street towards the end of the war is still there, embedded and chipped across wall and stone. it hasn't quite settled in my mind yet, and for the next week i am supposed to be doing some sort of cumulative project based around my week but i haven't a clue nor the desire to start anything remotely related, and not out of any negative reasons, but simply because i simply cannot think of anything fitting to apply myself to. everything i wanted to know and see is in my mind, through my eyes and - at a fairly large expense - developed upon matte prints from my camera. i am contempt with that.

anyway,

at the end of that obstacle comes, at long last, the chance for negotiated projects. no more dabbling about with briefs that the tutors know what to expect the finished outcome to look or bare resemblance to, no more pussyfooting around what we want to do and what we as illustrators are ''expected'' to do to earn ''proper'' money or lead a ''successful'' life, this is our chance to do what we want to do, though that obviously doesn't mean i'm going to run off willy-nilly and engage myself in practices i am all too familiar with. no, whilst the chance to create what i want to create in studio time is tempting, isn't that, really, what personal time is for? with this, i'll take the tutors guidance at doing a book cover or editorial, except this time i won't have to apply it to a brief they issue on a subject they can identify with, this time i'll be able to have full creative control over something i myself can get behind, so with that comes the time to yes, continue trying out new things under new guises under their supervisions, but to my own specifications.

we have dipped our feet into this slightly with the last project, information illustration (last post). there, we had full control over the subject and formatting, though it was closely monitored and relayed between tutors and ourselves to make sure we were doing what they think is best, which is understandable, it's what they are paid for and it's what we are paying them for. with choosing your own subject you actually get to dictate, if you will, the choices you make on your own terms and i believe that for my project i actually had the chance to explain my choices and actions for what i wanted to do (i.e. composition, style, imagery used) because it was a subject i could properly back and it was something that they weren't too familiar with, therefore under no expectations or any persuasions as to what it ''should'' look like to fall in line with final artwork seen from years before which is kind of how i see the attitude towards marking or criticizing yearly briefs can be like.

this is quite a ramble now, so i'll cut it short: i'm excited. i haven't fully decided on what i want to do for each project, for we now have our own deadlines to make and attend to, but a list in the back of a sketchbook notes that i'm toying with the ideas of book jackets and full colour illustrations for short stories from h.p. lovecraft and arthur conan doyle, music lyric narratives for ISIS' oceanic, pig destroyer's natasha and botch's afgamistam, packaging and graphic construction for a record(s), both self recorded and hopefully even some actual outside commission from bands, and possibly some other such narratives that i've wanted to get around to for years like making a comic, etc. either way, i'm excited for what's to come.

final artworks from our information illustration brief. the aim of this brief was to create a series of artworks that may be found in a piece of informative media, such as a book, on a poster, in flyers, etc. i choose to create five double page spreads focusing on the battle of stalingrad by soviet and german forces. i wanted to make a book that was neither another photographic coffee table book (which are good anyway) or a static, dull book of uniforms and equipment with mannequin-esqe soldiers milling or bumbling around simply for the reason to make it easier for the reader to make out details. the way i figure it, war doesn't standstill for such reasons, so i wanted to attract the sort of reader who has that masculine interest in such things as commando comics or putting a pair of boots on and rolling around in the woods all day with sticks for guns. at least, that's what i liked when i was young anyway.

i do not support, believe or want these images to in any way say that i support the idea of warfare, no less from the past or the present war on ''terror'' - i just wanted to make something that informed readers about the horrible events of stalingrad in a little more interesting way then, as said, simply reusing photographs or illustrating soldiers showing off a winter uniform or some such. anyway, i'm happy with it at least.

i, ii) family party near cheltenham. gigantic house, good company, great food and a time to chill out right off the back of leaving university for christmas after a pretty stressful project.

i haven't really done a reflective 2010 post, but there's some images from the last of it. if i were to highlight... uhh, highlights, it would look a little something like this:

/ my first year of university passed; knowledge gained and a little more understanding of where and what i want to do unearthed. still worrying and doubting, but still searching and striving. the people down here and the place we are in inspire hope, no matter what happens the day after we graduate. until then, i'm trying not to take it all for granted (but i still sleep in a lot, sadly)

/ music: music is good. 2010 was a year for releases by 65daysofstatic, alpinist, fukpig, adebisi shank, talons, foals, calories, deftones, rinoa, rosetta, rolo tomassi, tubelord, devil sold his soul, tall ships, &u&i, year of no light, and so i watch you from afar, torche, celeste, daughters, thou, boris & ian austbury and probably a fuck ton loads more. pulling up my last 12 months list on last.fm reveals mostly all of that, but yes, fantastic year for music. the majority of that list is notably UK based, too: we've got a lot to offer, and i'm so thankful about that.

/ related, festivals: 2000trees, off the cuff, damnation festival, all tomorrows parties. not a band line up between them, 2000trees being the perfect summer festival for about 50 quid thereabouts to see a fuckton of great bands playing at an eco-friendly festival with no dickheads for miles. a bit of rain, but what of it. notable highlights: tubelord, and so i watch you from afar, 65daysofstatic, listening to maybeshewill play whilst juggling crates of beer in the que whilst being rained on, chilling the fuck out and being a drunken state of nonsense to the silent disco. ace!

off the cuff was a hot, sweaty affair of mostly big scary monsters bands but again... what of it? it houses some of the finest uk acts and seeing so many together over two days was intense. drank an obscene amount of red stripe to last me all weekend on the saturday alone and they even had a mint little bbq on the go outside. this is all in the best pub in birmingham as well, the flapper, which made it even better returning back there after so many years. i used to see bands like municipal waste and send more paramedics there, so there was high expecations for more no-barrier low-stage chaos and it delivered. notable highlights include hold your horse is, men, &u&i, bronze medals, tubelord (again), holy state, maybeshewill (actually got to watch them this time), tall ships. also met some great people so the chat was good all weekend.

damnation festival is always a hefty weekender, with it being an amazing time of the year to see old friends as well as to join them for a day of the UK's finest in metal. i cannot stress enough just how good this festival is year in and year out though i'd like to say this was my favourite of all the years, and not even nessecarily just because of the bands on. that said, highlights were easily fukpig and anaal nathrakh tearing everyone a new one and for the third time, maybeshewill, who just don't seem to disappoint with their live sound whatsoever. flawless musicianship, and the new tracks are sounding a treat, too.

i only attended my first all tomorrows parties last year and that makes me quite sad, as it's probably the best run festival i've been to, and whilst it might not be on the same ranks as the above for highlighting the best of the united kingdoms talent, it doesn't half go the extra mile to get some of the worlds best talent, and then go even beyond it by finding the worlds most ridiculous and mental to boot. what feels best here is the fact that at the end of every day standing up watching an obscene amount of anti-music is that there is a bed waiting for you in your chalet and a shower in the morning which just about makes you ready to stomach another day of noise and nonsense, though i still love the camping experience of a festival just as much. this year saw me catching godspeed you! black emperor creating a depressingly dense, thick atmosphere of strings and feedback to a visual backdrop of burning streets and steaming engines which was probably one of the most heartwrenching things i've ever seen or heard. neurosis stormed the stage twice to a similar visual accompaniment and though i liked neurosis to begin with, seeing them live really made me respect their back catalog that extra bit more and since, they've become a whole new band to me, for the better. wolves in the throne room was a time to sit at the back of a dark room and absorb a torrent of disgustingly grim woodland-themed black metal, and the rest of the weekend was a bunch of noise bands. which i love, don't get me wrong. the entire ATP weekend is an experience i'm going to keep attending every year because of that, and it helps when the folks you shack up with are the same mental pricks from damnation who make it even more worth it.

/ new hopes: meeting someone special and spending a fantastic couple of weekends together throughout november and december. hopefully more of that come this year, and that excites me thorougly.

/ i'd like to think my health has improved, or at least i'm eating a lot more healthy these days. on the occasion during crunch i have cans of fizzy drink, and on train journeys i think thats a good time to warrant buying a bag of crisps... and alright, i still eat biscuits with me tea but i blame josh and tom, but on the whole i've cut out a lot of rubbish and have also been introduced to a whole range of new foods that make my week more exciting for dinner time. when the weather brightens up a bit i'll be back on my walks and hopefully back on my bike, and if i can just stomach going back to wolverhampton and not feeling the need to drink when i go out, i'll be able to kick it all together... not that i want to sound like an alcoholic or anything. at uni it's easy to ignore, but going back to your old friends, the appeal of having a pint is often too hard to pass by. still, for the most part i don't feel the need to drink to have fun anymore, nor to just have it as a casual side.

/ i didn't lose anyone i hold close or dear to me. everyone of those folk and myself included made it through to 2011, and that's always a plus, isn't it? thankful for that. related, made a lot of great new friends and i don't like to think that i lost any old friends. hopefully not, at least. more of this for this year, please!

FLATLANDS / 2005 - 2010

this band have meant a lot to me the last year or so. frustratingly hard to follow and keep track of, but the unearthing of their releases really hit home for me upon first listen to the debut black sluice and it's only today that i received their first ep vermuyden and the recently released self-titled flatlands ep through the post and managed to sit down with all three in hand and listen to them across the span of their time around before, in classic yet tediously inevitable unique-british-band fashion, they split up. apparently this happened in october, though the first i heard of it was just the other day.

it's been a bit of a kicker, really. just that tad bit gutting to see yet another amazing act go down the drain. the other week it was throats, before that rinoa. what a horrible state of affairs.

in their departure, new life is breathed into the songs i held so dear to me these last few months. it gives everything that extra bit more meaning, that little bit more energy and emotion to really bring everything together as a wonderful piece of music. on the flipside to that, the bleak, harrowing and depressive tones of such tracks as the unbearable lightness of spalding and things to do in dunham when you're dead will still be the deadpan and downbeat tones of boredom and strife that the samples and field recordings make them, but that's what makes this band so appealing to me: the absolute loss of anything pleasant or hopeful in their words and musicianship... except for, of course, the fact and they're utter fucking riff masters and sludgy slabs of downtuned rumblings and wailing never sounded so good or apt to be the soundtrack to a band that wrote lyrics based solely around lincolnshire. a band with a truly monumental sound, cease to be.

rest in peace, you poor bored bastards.

some work produced by myself, finn clark, josh hurley and tom turner over the last two weeks: raising awareness of rainforest destruction by literally bringing it home. the campaign - a run of bus shelter prints, billboard posters and magazine spreads - was to show workers destroying a rainforest, or what we have come to ignore as something else's home, only instead of trees and nature, they are invading our own sanctuaries and privacy by tearing up our homes. it's best explained in person i guess, but nevertheless it was a lot of fun. we did another project but the artworks and visuals are sitting on our desks in the studio, so i'll throw them up another time.....

bear in mind these are visuals created in one night and are only created in concept to show off the basic barebones of an idea; in reality, with a budget, we envisioned actors, a proper photo shoot, a set... but instead, given the timeframe of one day to bounce ideas, a second to create, we went with cut out models and a camera, whilst finn created some lovely photoshop mock-ups. all in, a good two days work, we reckon. good fun.

''oubliette'' is the claustrophobic, dark and paranoia-inducing thoughts of a man who is troubled by his environment and mental status, believing himself to be part man, part rat, or perhaps one or the other but trapped inside of the others mind. it's a very personal short-story, relying upon the readers own interpretation to determine a suitable finish and concluding thoughts, and that i found quite interesting.

i wanted the images to really give off an atmospheric sense of claustrophobia and a quirky, almost schizophrenic energy within the mark making and imagery to reflect the characters thoughts on himself and his surroundings, never quite creating anything too clear or obvious but instead using a continous theme of obvious sewer references amongst a whole jumble of less blatent marks and drawings. my thoughts on the text are that it's loosely refined for the reason that the viewer must create his or her own image of the character and his place of habitat through what is told in the writing and i wouldn't want my images to influence or pursuade their train of thought otherwise - simply, i wanted to create visuals that the reader could take in at their own pace and to really just create backdrops for the narrative. whether or not this is a ''correct'' method for commercial narrative illustration is beyond me, i personally prefer the writing to reinforce my thoughts. i took a lot of influence from henrik drescher's book ''turbulence'' during the creation of these, which might explain a lot, both in visual form and for my ethic towards the illustrations.

i am not actually thirsty nor miserable i am refreshed by the countless amounts of spar value orange and apple juice cartons that are dotted around my NEW ROOM and living in falmouth is anything by miserable, i have however latched/leeched on to a new line of work by way of a music promotions outlet thanks to one ben adsett (http://www.weareoutofstep.blogspot.com/ and others) so here's some work i've been doing for that with more to come soon

simple two colour flyers that i think are going to get printed and plastered around. either way a good chance to use what i've been messing about with lately which is well it's dead fish and volcano ... things. that and just simple blok colours you know whatever shut up. again some more to come, i'll compile these with the manatees/taint flyers and use them to bulk up my summer project work that i have to hand in sometime soon before i start uni. exciting times

before these i was asked to create a logo for said promotions, here's some of those and then the final image that was chosen

in running order: first, second and third design, it was decided the more written (last) one was preferable which was the one i liked the least so i went and re-did it and came out with this

what else? i am also working on a really messy and horrible book called NATASHA based on the fantastic pig destroyer song of the same name. it's really tatty and rubbish and based on a book of black and white photos based in tiverton, devon. it's really just a glorified sketchbook but it's got a (creepy) narrative running throughout. that said i haven't touched my regular sketchbook in long time but i'm using a really thin throwaway scrappy-like book to throw down ideas dead fast and that has kind of spiraled into a storyboard for a comic that i'll maybe work on when i go home tomorrow. maybe i dunno it started off pretty simple about these russians who just... fight i guess but now it's kind of twisted it's way towards being a mix of the thing meets the first alien film with a bit of the game dead space thrown in for good (gory) measure. more on that some other day

this summer also saw 2000trees festival with the likes of and so i watch you from afar, tubelord, 65daysofstatic, three trapped tigers, vessels, pulled apart by horses, frank turner and new found discover cats and cats and cats. all were pretty fucking fantastic to be blunt, the entire festival was blindingly good and it's inexcusable of me to have not gone in previous years. downsides were a bit of rain and missing maybeshewill, but i could hear them from the entrance que and anyway i saw them the next week at off the cuff in festival which was EVEN BETTER. saw a lot of well-looked forward to bands and was introduced to a whole host of exciting bands that have further proved there is so much hope for the uk music scene. bands caught, enjoyed, sweated-to and made laugh by; adebisi shank, &u&i, bronze medals, tubelord, tall ships, the computers, men, hold your horse is, run, walk!, maybeshewill, holy state and a whole fuckton more. great weekend, great bands. again, inexcusable to have never attended before.

after many headaches, skull scratchings and early morning confusion regarding mirrored images, horizontal and vertical openings, the artwork for the joyous EP is finally done. my first *proper* CD design, lucky enough for it to be a fancy cardboard gatefold type and with a free reign to do whatever i wanted, though it was decided to contrast heavily on the inside and outside, but mostly what i wanted. this is going to be printed and assembled by the band themselves.

in the pipe: tour flyers for MANATEES, logo for HAMMERS, logo for italian band LIFELESS, applied illustration final images, assorted side projects... busy busy busy, yet so tired, sleepy and lazy.

for all the unoriginal, uninspired, rip-off and off-the-beat of the pulse festivals this country has, it still manages to come through with hardhitters that blow my mind. here's looking forward to what the damnation folk manage to pull off and that'll be my three amazing festivals for this year done.

one last thing i'm working on before i leave falmouth for easter, or have been the last few nights anyway. creative energy is a little low at the moment due to the stress of the last week of getting my illustrated book done, but as of now that is all printed, edited, bound and handed in so from now until the first day of term there is no immediate work to be done, just this work above that i'm working away at every now and again (i'm keeping it under wraps because if it gets all sorted, it's going to be big. hopefully) and some reading to do for our next brief at the start of the next term which is fairly open, but it's ''applied'' illustration meaning it's still to a specification of sorts. more on that at another date.

sadly i didn't take any photos of my book as i was binding on the very last day of the deadline (just like everyone else, i'm not *the* slowest in the class) and i forgot my camera but i'll grab some snaps after easter or maybe just throw up the book files itself if there's nothing else to blog about over the FOUR WEEKS rest. i am ridiculously excited about getting home. not so much the train journey, but i've books to read, a sketchbook to fill and new albums to delve into so whatever, just get it over with.

it's been a good term on the falmouth front, not quite the same antics and hilarity of the first term but that was freshers and an ease into work, whereas this term they've hit us with three big projects and the finale of the illustrated book itself so things have been hectic to say the least. pros have been house parties, diana camera, finding a house, great weather, vinyl and the same good people who make it the best of the best down here, but that sounds soppy so enough of that. cons aren't to be spoken about.

train -> home -> family -> friends -> xbox -> bed -> the holidays -> ??? -> traim -> falmouth.

above: FAUST posters, new and old. last project of the term save any ongoing visual studies work and the illustrated book, which is to be done for friday.

the first is my final design that i put together today, the second a rough i threw together in 30 minutes last week. it shares the same themes and basic layout, but i spruced it up from a more flat, two-dimensional layout to something a little more lively and dark to proper reflect the atmosphere of the story... or something.

this wasn't my initial intention - to be quite honest, this project hasn't boded well with me for the entire three weeks hence the last minute piece of work. this is mostly because the brief wasn't quite what i hoped (read: hyped) it to be, and that the illustrated book has taken a priority, or more the center spread had. more on that later, i've got to receive the prints of my book, edit them and bind them before i'm happy enough to say i'm finished, that day hopefully to be wednesday. we'll see.

i had a long talk with a tutor today about the direction of the course, a few of my distastes and worries but it's all soothed itself over now and it's thank to that that i've sat down reluctantly to give this project another go and even though it's likely i'm to be chewed out again for not having this, not appealing to this audience, not being smart enough with my images and at the same time (?!) being too complicated... well, fuck 'em, it's done and i'm happy. mostly because it's a skull. and some shards, somewhere. some of the text isn't technically finished, it's missing the dates and info line regarding the composer but i'm going to add them in my hand on the final print out.

cannot fathom have much i'm excited for this album. i've been clawing for live audio of the new songs as much as i can the last few months, ever since i first heard them played when i saw them at square fest last year, only then i had no idea what they were or what they were for. right now i'm spinning two mix mashups from a DJ set they did that are direct line-in feeds from a laptop of weak4 and TD, as well as piano fights and an unknown song from a marc riley session.

... though sadly, not all the pieces could be put together for this project. what started as a large, A1 sized idea has had to be reduced down to a A3 poster showcasing not even half the characters drawn, nonetheless important fictional characters themselves in the show, and a few locations cut from the spot illustration pile due to space.

regardless, a fun project. the theme was maps, and right from the get go i had my idea set on basing it around the wire, central west baltimore (or actually east baltimore, as that's where the majority of the filming and locations are regardless of the shows plot) as starting as a project based around research first and foremost, there isn't something i know more than this wonderful tv. i feel at this point that i know west b-more on the back of my hand, i've watched it and subsequence david simon/ed burns shows so much now, but that's for another post. or not.

i'd like to say ''if i had another week...'', but i said that for my last project, based around the figure. at least the research here was done pretty proper, though a few things have been tweaked but unless you're a fan of the wire, the average joe shouldn't be able to spot them. that's such a ridiculous way of me to cut a corner, but i assure you, automated spambot follower 000189282, it was for the best.

next project is based around posters. i am very excited.

above: possible character design for research project and test background prints for said project. as of today these ideas are unchecked by tutors, tomorrow i present my idea and thoughts then go from there. the character is a mock up showing the style i am working my project around. the project itself is entitled the figure within illustration and we have three separate briefs to choose from. mine is based around the seven deadly sins, more specifically anger, and it's counter, patience. hard to see what my idea is just yet, so more on that to come in later days.

i'm trying to update my header but it's taking an age, it'll probably pop up at some point though but until then, who knows. i'll of changed it more than a few times anyway as i'm never happy with this kinda stuff.

alot of my book has descended in made up nonsense and aimless doodling for the most part, though i did get some observational work done, though looking back through it alot of it i'm not too happy with, so it's a small selection. must try harder at this kind of thing as it's going to play a pretty important part of our second term, and our paris trip in year two, or so i hear. whatever, i'll do it on the night.

holidays going well. christmas was pleasant, more so going into it at 20 and not really knowing what to expect. i'm hesitant to say that the charm is no longer there, as it is, but it felt quite odd this year. all in all though it was a great day with some great folk and still continues to be to this day, hopefully right through till new year as well. good company, good food and some great gifts including true blood season one, flight of the conchords, star wars original trilogy (!), ghostbusters tee, some old architects ''yellow paper'' straight from the past new york, new pens, beer, chocolate and assorted novelty stocking items, borderlands for the 360 which is v. fun and tons of other great stuff. class.

probably my favourite gift is just something i got last night, the NOTHING NICE TO SAY volume one collection. i cannot recommend these comics and illustrator mitch clem enough, so go check him out over at at http://www.mitchclem.com/nothingnice/ (warning: may be difficult to follow unless a fan of punk and hardcore, though all in all it's very tongue in cheek and i shouldn't worry too much about that. just look at it as an exploration of the awesome and absurd of punk rock, which i think is what the back of the book says and i'm just copying that. whatever go read already.) i am going to enjoy reading back through all the old just like i do pretty much every few months on his site. too fucking funny.

the problem with listening to really good new music is that it often keeps me to silly-o-clock on urges and whims to do something creative. the other problem is leaving half of my equipment at falmouth for obvious transports reasons, and the very core of my creative output is done through my scanner and computer, both of which are in my flat. until then... photos of the week ''study'' trip to london.

a to g: reflective surface somewhere in london; awesome old-fashioned coffee shop scouted out by one j. hurley and d. slice; generator hostel interior light; cheap sandwich/tinny time to combat silly london prices; drinks w/ illustrators; wonderful ceiling.

though frustrations and bitterness of that cursed city aside, it was good fun. the agencies and publishers were very interesting and the shenanigans and banter all around was top, top times. as if my fatigue of the city couldn't of been any worse having travelled from falmouth to home, then down to wolves after a brief birthday break, then after that tiring week i was back down south to minehead for all tomorrows parties which was AMAZING. seriously... they know how to put on a fest. highlights include: messy, smoked out chalets with some amazing bellends who i usually only get to see once a year at damnation, early morning SUNNO))) set destroying my eardrums, modest mouse being everything and more than i could of imagined, battles, yeah yeah yeahs, explosions in the sky, many more but my favourite act of the weekend being the hour of distorted, glitchy, trancey noise from the FUCK BUTTONS set. it got a point where my eyes were closed for a good 20 minutes, and then someone behind me pulled my hood down, thus disturbing my lovely little absorbtion. protip: your a cunt.

but anyway, amazing. i wish i could of taken photos, but i'm not sure if i would of been able to find any time between moving about all weekend and having my eyes glued to every single act i watched. just... mindblowing. thanks ATP!

just a quick one from our deadline today based on a brief entitled quotes. pick a quote from a list of 10, work up some rough ideas on conceptualizing it into a self-descriptive image then produce a final for crit. we've been doing this for 4/5 weeks now - going away and getting out heads around fairly linear briefs and slowly i've been introducing a few more things into each piece of work. not so much this specific final as i was stretched for time and a printer to get the results i wanted, but i'm fairly happy with it anyway. more of these when i unearth them from my desk.

above: two out of... five (maybe?) flyers currently in the spin for local band Little Fury (myspace.com/littlefuryuk - go listen). just a little summer project to get me on my feet a little bit, also using this ''brief'' of sorts to try out some ideas and techniques so that they all don't look or feel the same. that's the plan anyway. more on them soon.

enough with the cryptic jibber-jabber/deely/dowhat and nonce-sense. this is summer and summer is dull, so here is some recent work. i have little to none motivation for a real time-lapse set of works, though i have plenty of ideas for what i would like to do. i miss having briefs and a fine art teacher to set me on the right track every time i strayed too far from it. hopefully falmouth gets me back into the game in a few months... can't wait.
